CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte law enforcement officers are scheduled to receive hefty bonuses on Thursday under a compensation program passed by state legislators.
The Charlotte City Council formally accepted more than $3.1 million in state funding on Monday to pay for the bonuses. The money will be divided between 1,405 officers, 167 sergeants and 96 command staff, according to the council meeting agenda.

The program will not use any city funding.
Eligible recipients will receive $1,750 this week, with the rest of the money going toward the city’s payroll taxes. Part-time officers will receive a prorated amount.
The General Assembly included a provision for the bonuses in this year’s state budget. Gov. Josh Stein signed the budget bill into law in July. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is administering the program, which is not part of officers’ annual salary.
