DINWIDDIE — A Chesterfield County man who told authorities that God told him to shoot Virginia State Police Trooper Junius A. Walker has been deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial in the trooper’s slaying and will be sent to Central State Hospital for rehabilitation.

Dinwiddie County Commonwealth’s Attorney Lisa Caruso told the court during a short hearing today that a clinical psychologist determined through a mental evaluation that Russell E. Brown III was incompetent to stand trial in the March 7 killing of Walker, 63.

Brown, 28, is charged with eight felony counts, including capital murder of a police officer, in the killing of Walker, who was fatally shot in his police cruiser on Interstate 85 after the officer rolled up to Brown’s vehicle and stopped on the shoulder to see if he needed any help.
