RYE, N.H. — The town’s fire chief has issued a public apology for the name of the late Cullen Mutrie — who shot five police officers, killing one — being read during a firefighter’s memorial service on Sunday.

“The Hampton Falls Fire Department screwed up,” Fire Chief Jay Lord said in a statement released Tuesday. “I was not at the event, but take full responsibility for the actions of my members. I have researched the event and found that it was not done intentionally, or with any malice in mind. It truly was a mistake that was made and it will not happen again. I sincerely apologize for any grief this has caused.”

The statement was addressed to the family of the late Greenland Police Chief Michael Maloney, who was shot and killed by Mutrie, as well as to “all New Hampshire Fire and Police Department members.”
