EL DOROADO SPRINGS, Mo. — A deputy was shot and killed during a pursuit and gunfire exchange early Sunday.

KSHB reports 25-year-old Deputy Matthew Chism attempted to stop a driver for a traffic violation when the driver refused to stop. After a brief vehicle pursuit, a passenger, 28-year-old William A. Collins, fled the vehicle and continued his escape on foot.

A physical altercation ensued before shots were fired by both Officer Chism and Collins.

Officer Chism was transported to a hospital and later died. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle in the pursuit was located at a residence and another 28-year-old man was taken into custody for questioning.

Police are currently investigating the incident. Deputy Chism served with the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office for two years, according to ODMP. He is survived by his wife and child.
