APPLETON, Wis. — When an officer was injured in a shooting and couldn’t make her planned Torch Run for the Special Olympics, officers stepped in to help.
Like other LEOs in the department, Officer Stephanie Wiener had committed to running for the Special Olympics, WBAY reported. When she was shot by a suspect and her injuries prevented her from participating, three other officers stepped up for her.
“You do it because it’s your partner. You do it because it’s your friend. You do it because it’s your sister who can’t,” one unidentified undercover officer told the news site.
According to WBAY, Wiener was shot by the shoplifting suspect with her own service weapon May 28. The suspect, 23-year-old Marcus Felton, fatally shot himself in the head during the struggle.
With the help of the community and officers, Wiener raised over $3,000 to donate to the organization, Sgt. Dave Lund told the site.
“We hope to push that number a lot higher,” Lund said. “We want her to be the number one contributor for this event in the state of Wisconsin.”
Donations in Wiener’s name can be made on her fundraising page.
