MAYWOOD, Ill. — A Maywood police sergeant shot and wounded a person who allegedly tried to run him down with a car Thursday afternoon.
Sgt. Dwayne Wheeler was conducting a drug investigation at 17th Avenue and Harrison Street around 3 p.m. when he saw a driver in a Lexus strike several cars before trying to hit him, said Police Sgt. Tim Curry.
"[Wheeler] fired one shot through the windshield in defense of his life,” Curry said.
The driver was struck by the bullet and was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Curry said. His identity and condition were not known Thursday evening, Curry said.
No other details on the incident were available, Curry said.
The incident occurred about five hours after a similar incident in nearby Oak Park. A Chicago police officer feared for his life and shot a suspect who was trying to run him down with a car, authorities said.
