LAPLACE, La. — A Louisiana deputy was shot and killed by his fellow officers after opening fire during a domestic dispute Wednesday.

The Times-Picayune reports police responded to a call of a domestic dispute when the standoff occurred.

50-year-old Lt. Nolan Anderson, a 25-year-veteran of the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office, reportedly assaulted his wife with his gun before police arrived.

The neighborhood was evacuated and SWAT was on the scene at the time of the shooting.

Police attempted to talk Anderson down and get him to drop his weapon. Anderson then began shooting at deputies and they returned fire, hitting him multiple times while he was standing in his doorway.

Anderson was in uniform and on-duty at the time of the deadly gun battle. He was pronounced dead at a hospital, according to the report.

“It’s a tough day. I knew Nolan, we all knew Nolan,” St. John Sheriff Mike Tregre said. “We went to high school together, played ball together, a very good officer.”

His wife was transported to the hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

Police will not say if there was a history of violence between the two. The incident is currently under investigation by state police.

There were no other reported injuries in the standoff.
