Police: Mich. trooper shot several times during traffic stop

Police said a fleeing suspect was killed after he and the trooper exchanged gunfire

MISSAUKEE COUNTY, Mich. — A trooper was injured by gunfire and a fleeing man is dead after the the two traded gunfire during a traffic stop.

State police on Friday, July 13 said the shooting happened about 1:30 p.m. in Lake Township of Missaukee County, northeast of Cadillac.

Police said the fleeing person fired first and the trooper, assigned to the Houghton Lake state police post, then fired back.

The trooper had pulled over a vehicle moments earlier. The vehicle contained two males and a female.

"One male fled from the vehicle and began firing upon the trooper, and the trooper returned fire," state police said in a statement.

Names of the trooper and the deceased person have not been released.

Police said the trooper was struck several times by gunfire. He was conscious and alert when taken to a Traverse City hospital for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police said the other people in the stopped vehicle did not get out and they were taken into custody following the shooting.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
