CINCINNATI — Dash cam video has been released of a violent Tuesday incident involving two officers that ended in a fatal shooting.
According to Cincinnati.com, Officers Thomas Weigand and Mark Bode stopped an SUV after witnessing the driver change lanes without signaling, in addition to having an illegal window tint.
The officers removed a female passenger and 37-year-old Donyale Rowe, who was seated in the back of the vehicle.
Rowe ran from the two officers. In the ensuing pursuit and struggle, Rowe pulled out a pistol. Police attempted to deploy a TASER, but it did not stop Rowe.
Police fired six shots at Rowe, hitting him twice and killing him.
Officer Weigand told officials the suspect pointed the gun so close to his face, it touched his cheek, according to the report.
Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell described the incident as a “fight for survival,” and believes the officers followed the correct procedures in the Tuesday incident.
“It was a violent fight. It was literally a fight for survival for both of those officers,” Blackwell said.
Both officers received minor injuries in the incident.
The female suspect was later found after fleeing the scene, but not charged, according to WCPO. The driver of the SUV, Jonathan Johnson, was arrested on a misdemeanor drug charge and improper change of lane.
Both officers are on paid leave pending the investigation, per policy.
