SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio — Faculty members of Shaker Heights High School and residents made frantic calls to 911 on Friday after they heard gunshots outside the school that turned out to be an officer shooting a carjacking suspect, according to 911 calls released on Wednesday.
The school went into lockdown after shots were fired. Students were off for the day, but the school was open for extracurricular activities.
The release of the 911 calls marks the first release of any information in the five days following the shooting.
Police officials said Wednesday that the officer who shot the person is on leave. Shaker Heights police officials have so far refused to release the name of the officer, along with other public records related to the shooting.
One of the 911 calls came from a teacher who told a dispatcher he witnessed the shooting.
“I saw a man running with a gun, and the police shot him,” the teacher said.
A frightened woman called because her husband is an employee at the school. The dispatcher gave her some encouraging words and told her the police had the scene under control.
A resident who lives near the school also called 911.
“I heard at least three or four shots,” the caller told the dispatcher.
The man who was shot has not been identified, and his current condition remains unknown as of Wednesday afternoon.
A spokeswoman from the police department told reporters from cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer on Tuesday that the police report was incomplete and could not be inspected.
Shaker Heights police use dash and body cameras while on duty, but the department have not released those.
Police said the shooting happened after police spotted a vehicle on Lee Road that had been stolen out of Painesville. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped away, police said.
The vehicle was later involved in a two-car crash on Lee Road, near Parkland Avenue. Both vehicles were damaged. The man exited the car and ran away with a firearm in his hand, according to police.
Two officers and a police dog chased the man. The officer ordered the man to drop the gun, police officials said. The man pointed the gun at police and was shot by one of the officers near the intersection of Laurel and Onoway roads, police said.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident.
