BWC: Barricaded man emerges from bedroom with shotgun pointed at Ariz. officers before fatal OIS

Cottonwood PD officers attempted to negotiate with the man before calling a SWAT team; officers then heard a shotgun being racked before the man emerged with a gun

COTTONWOOD, Ariz. —The Cottonwood Police Department released body camera footage showing an officer-involved shooting of a man who racked a shotgun and pointed it at officers.

The April 27 incident occurred when two officers were responding to a call over a domestic dispute, according to the critical incident release. The 911 caller stated that her husband was “raging” and had access to multiple firearms.

When officers entered the home, they called the suspect by name and requested that he come out and speak with them. He did not respond for several minutes.

After the officers did not get a response from the suspect, they called SWAT to negotiate the situation. One officer left the doorway of the room the suspect was in to clear all other people from the home, while the other officer remained at the door and called for the SWAT team.

After the officer used his radio, officers on scene heard sounds from behind the door. The Cottonwood PD identified one of the sounds as a shotgun being racked, according to the release. The suspect then emerged from the room carrying a shotgun pointed in the officer’s direction. The officers fired multiple shots, striking the suspect.

The suspect succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
