HILLSBORO, Ore. — Body camera footage released Monday by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office shows a bloody struggle unfold after investigators say a man tried to grab a deputy’s gun inside a Hillsboro emergency room Oct. 24, leading the deputy to stab him multiple times.
Sheriff’s officials identified the attacker Monday as 27-year-old Joshua Weasley. He sustained injuries to his head and chest and was taken to another hospital, where he is still receiving medical treatment, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Court records show Weasley hasn’t been charged in the case.
A hospital employee who tried to help the deputy sustained minor injuries during the struggle.
The deputy, identified Monday as Zane Hafeman, was placed on leave while the Washington County Major Crimes Team investigates as is standard procedure. The sheriff’s office did not provide Hafeman’s age.
Weasley was at Kaiser Permanente Westside Medical Center shortly after 2 a.m. on Oct. 24 on a civil hold when he emerged from his evaluation room and charged at Hafeman, who was filling out paperwork, sheriff’s office spokesperson John Bennett said.
The footage shows an adult man jogging out of a hospital room and toward the deputy, who puts out his hands to stop him. The two men struggle to the ground, and blood appears on the attacker’s forearm and pant leg and is smeared on the ground. Another person is shown restraining the man from behind on the floor.
A hospital employee is shown kneeling down next to the pair, saying “he’s got a knife in his abdomen. Have restraints ready.” The deputy can be heard saying “shots fired,” though no shots were fired during the struggle.
Bennett said the deputy’s words were likely a “stress response” to draw other law enforcement officers to the scene.
