LOS ANGELES — Three LAPD officers are receiving acclaim after they helped save the life of an injured pit bull last week. The officers found the dog — abandoned and left for dead — on the roadside in L.A. and brought it to an animal hospital to have leg surgery.
Bystanders told them the dog, Philly, had been hit by a car and was laying there for more than five hours, barely moving, according to MyFoxLA.
After finding a microchip during surgery, the officers went to the home of the dog’s owner, who told police they couldn’t afford the $10,000 vet bill and recommended putting the dog down.
“We couldn’t let him go. We couldn’t just walk away,” Officer Cindy Herrera told KTTV.
Officers Herrera, Jennifer Cohen, and Valerie Lancaster adopted Philly and started a donation site to raise funds for the veterinarian bill, according to the Huffington Post. Their Facebook page has grown to more than 7,000 fans.
