CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Charleston Police said officers went beyond the call of duty after learning from an injured pregnant mother at a vehicle crash that her 2-year-old daughter was at home alone. They went to the residence, changed the child’s wet diaper, and fed her breakfast.

Police responded to a vehicle crash Monday and spoke to one of the drivers, a pregnant woman who had been injured in the accident, according to information posted on the Charleston Police Department Community Services Facebook page.

After she told them about her child at home, Cpl. Peter Kapeluck and Cpl. Martin McMicken went to the residence and knocked several times with no answer. Kapeluck found the front door unlocked, entered the home, and found the 2-year-old girl upstairs with no one there to care for her.
