When dealing with a motorcycle operator on a traffic stop, use these precautions to maximize your safety:
- Have the driver turn off the motorcycle, but have them stay seated on it. Most riders who will want to assault you will not want to drop their bike onto the ground. They will have to put the stand down first in order to get up giving you ample time to react.
- Have the driver (and passenger, if present) remove their helmet. This way, they can’t use the helmet to injure you. You will also be able to use OC spray against them if you need to. If you have the driver or passenger get off the motorcycle, have them leave the helmet sitting on the bike.
- Approach from the right side and position yourself like you would if they were in a vehicle. Since most people are right handed, this is a very awkward movement for them if they intend to use a weapon against you. This also prevents the driver from pushing you into the traffic lane.
