N.C. standoff ends with suspect’s suicide

The News & Observer

JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. A nearly three-hour standoff between Johnston County sheriff’s deputies and a man wanted on several outstanding warrants ended just before midnight Tuesday when the man shot himself.

Deputies received a call at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday from a bail bondsman about a man with outstanding warrants. A deputy responding verified the warrants and tried to arrest the man.

The incident occurred at a single-story brick home at 1412 Old U.S. 70 near Shotwell Road, just outside of Clayton, where the man barricaded himself in the back room and held a gun to his head to keep deputies at bay for hours.

Capt. Bengie Gaddis of the sheriff’s department said that just before midnight, the man “injured himself with a self-inflicted gunshot wound” and that he was transported to Johnston Memorial Hospital where his condition was not immediately known.

Officials did not release the man’s name but confirmed that the warrants were for a probation violation in Johnston County and a habitual offender violation that carries a $500,000 bond.
