PHILADELPHIA, Pa. A armed man who caused a lockdown at St. Mary Medical Center in Bucks County during a four-hour standoff with police last night surrendered without incident at midnight, police said.

The incident had caused the hospital to close its doors about 7:30 p.m., though police began escorting people out of the complex about 10 p.m. Employees and patients left from exits far from the rear of the complex and emergency room, where the man was in a vehicle, hospital spokesman Patrick Donohue said.

No one was hurt and no shots were fired, Donohue said. The hospital is in Middletown Township near Langhorne.

The man had pulled up to the emergency room about 7:30 p.m. in an SUV with a woman, who either escaped or was released unharmed. It was unclear what prompted the incident.

Middletown Police Sgt. Mark Wert said the lockdown was ordered as police recalled the rampage at the emergency room two years ago.

On Sept. 29, 2005, Newtown Borough Police Officer Brian S. Gregg was shot and killed, and two other men, including a police officer, were wounded.

Robert Flor, whom Gregg had brought to the emergency room for blood and urine testing in a drunken driving arrest, was sentenced to death last year for the killing.
