Video: NYPD cop jumps into frigid water to save teenage girl in distress

The girl jumped into the cold river as officers arrived; one officer swam about 20 feet to pull her to safety

NEW YORK —Body camera footage shows an NYPD officer jumping into frigid river water to save a teenage girl in distress, the New York Post reported.

The incident began when officers responded to reports of a teenager in distress, apparently preparing to jump off Harlem River Drive, according to the report. Officers Ankit Gupta, Wilmer Guerrero and Shuaibul Amine arrived on the scene as the girl jumped into the water.

She quickly surfaced and began crying for help, video shows. Guerrero removed his gear and jumped into the water after her.

“It was definitely a cold plunge, freezing. But at that moment, nothing else mattered but just getting her out of the water. So, I got over it pretty quickly,” Guerrero told the New York Post after the incident.

Guerrero swam about 20 feet out to reach the girl and was able to pull her to safety.

“And hopefully we gave this girl a second chance, because obviously, this thing could have gone a whole different way,” Guerrero said.

Guerrero, Gupta and Amine all work for the 32nd precinct and have less than four years on the job, according to the report.
