Hit-and-Run Claims Life of Police Dog in Western N.Y. Town

WSTM-TV News (New York)

HAMBURG, N.Y. Police in a Buffalo suburb are looking for the driver who struck and killed a police dog and then fled the scene.

The handler of the dog named Kilo -- a three-year-old drug-sniffing dog for the Gowanda Police Department -- says the K-9 was hit by a car Tuesday night and died instantly.

Dave Hock says he let Kilo run after stopping to pick him up at the construction company in Hamburg that Hock operates by day. Hock says the dog ran to the edge of the road and was hit by a car that crossed the white line.

Kilo was involved in sniffing out drugs in a large-scale bust in Buffalo last summer as well as working narcotics cases in Gowanda and Springville in southern Erie County.
