The Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Police shot and killed a 15-year-old boy when he turned toward officers who were chasing him. They said he had an object that appeared to be a gun.

The victim was identified as Courtney Williams. Witnesses said he was part of a group of boys who went out around midnight Saturday.

Police were told that someone in the group had a gun. The boys ran away when police responded. Police said Williams was shot when he turned toward officers.

“There was a gun recovered at the scene that resembled a .45-caliber semiautomatic,” Police Chief Williams McManus said. “It turned out to be a pellet gun.”

The boy’s mother, Tahisha Brewer, told WCCO-TV that police didn’t tell her for four hours that her son had been shot.

“His heart was still beating when he went to North Memorial Hospital, the doctors told me,” she said. “I could have been there them last few minutes. Yeah, he might not have lived. But I could have been there.”

The case remained under investigation.
