AUSTIN (AP) - A weekend motorcycle crash claimed the lives of a popular police commander and her husband, authorities said.
Cmdr. Shauna Jacobson, a 20-year veteran of the Austin Police Department, and retired Detective Malcolm “Kurt” Jacobson died Saturday at the scene of the crash in western Travis County, officials said.
The cause of the wreck was under investigation. Police said Kurt Jacobson was driving the motorcycle.
Shauna Jacobson, 46, had worked in the theft and sex crime units before becoming the first female detective assigned to the homicide unit.
Kurt Jacobson, 42, retired from the department in 2002 after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He had worked as a Travis County sheriff’s deputy before joining the department about 15 years ago.
“We are devastated,” Austin Police Association President Mike Sheffield said. “They were two extremely well-liked people.”
Their deaths came as the department was mourning the loss of another officer this fall. Officer Amy Donovan died in October after being struck by her partner’s car while chasing a suspect.
