HOPEMAN, Scotland — It’s a straight-shot through the Scottish village of Hopeman, and residents believe it tempts drivers to speed through their neighborhoods.
BBC News reported drivers reach speeds up to 60 mph through the streets, and residents are fearful the speed could lead to injuries or fatalities.
“It’s very dangerous, the speed that the traffic is doing through Hopeman is quite serious, especially when the kids are going to school in the morning - it’s quite alarming,” councillor Dennis Slater said.
The town’s residents, including children, have taken matters into their own hands with hairdryers (that they hope drivers will mistake for radar guns) and vibrant vests, hoping to encourage drivers to slow down.
“We don’t like to be seen standing with hairdryers and hi-vis vests, we are trying to emphasize to people the desperate situation,” Slater told the news station. “Please slow down going through our community.”
Local police said they are aware of the speeding complaints and will continue to address the issue.
