BWC: Dog leads Ill. officer to his leash during house fire

Oakley, a Staffordshire Terrier, raced through the smoke-filled home and sat right by his leash before Aurora PD officers led him to safety

AURORA, Ill. — A quick-thinking dog — and an even quicker police response — turned a potentially tragic house fire into a heartwarming rescue that’s now gaining national attention.

On Sept. 11, Aurora police and fire personnel responded to reports of a house fire on Whitehall Court. When officers arrived, flames were visible from the rear of the home, the Aurora Police Department said. Unsure if anyone was inside, Investigator Michael Ely and Investigator Jacob Leonard forced entry and began a search.

Body camera footage released by the Aurora Police Department shows the investigators moving through thick smoke inside the home. That’s when Ely encountered Oakley, a 4-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier — and the only one home at the time. In a moment that’s captured hearts online, Oakley greeted his rescuer and led the officer directly to his leash. He sat down patiently as the officer put the leash on before being safely escorted outside.

“I’m proud of the way our officers handled this situation,” said Police Chief Matt Thomas. “Their quick response made a real difference, and it’s always rewarding when we can return a family member — even a four-legged one — safely to their loved ones.”

Oakley’s family, who asked to remain anonymous, said he’s a rescue adopted as a puppy from the local organization Players for Pits.

“He is an athletic dog who loves to play and wrestle,” they said. “He enjoys snuggling with us, snoring loudly as he sleeps, sunbathing and eating peanut butter. We are forever grateful to Mike at the Aurora Police Department for saving our sweet dog.”

No injuries were reported. Investigators believe the fire started in the attic and found no signs of foul play. While the structure remained intact, the homeowners were advised to stay elsewhere temporarily as a precaution.

Since its release, the video has gone viral — with viewers praising the officers’ bravery and Oakley’s unexpected role in his own rescue.
