Accused Robber Nabbed Next to Police Xmas Party

CONWAY, N.H. (AP) _ Conway police arrived at a restaurant next to their annual Christmas party about a half-hour early, but it wasn’t out of anticipation for the festivities. They had to arrest an alleged bank robber first.

Police had been tipped that Michael Mahone, of Conway, Ark., a suspect in a robbery in Maine last month, was working at a local restaurant. After police confirmed that a car Mahone was believed to have stolen was at the restaurant Friday evening, a detective and uniformed officer entered and asked for a table.

Mahone, 26, was the perfect host, except that after seating the officers, he made for the back door, police said.

Mahone was intercepted in the kitchen, and eight other officers and a police dog waited just outside the door.

He was arrested on a fugitive warrant in the Nov. 19 robbery of the Gardiner Federal Credit Union in Maine.

“As a side note,” police Chief Jeff Dicey said, “Conway Police officers made it to the Christmas party with two minutes to spare.”
