Cops Track Down Alleged Calif. Street Gang Member in Oregon on Assault Charges

Medford, Ore. (AP) -- An alleged member of a San Diego street gang has been arrested in Southern Oregon and is facing assault charges.

The arrest of 25-year-old Gustavo Delariva-Torres, whom police said is known as “The Shadow,” came about three weeks after the May 16 stabbing of 22-year-old Jason Torres in Medford.

Police began their case with no leads and little information, authorities said. But they found out Delariva-Torres’ nickname, called the San Diego police to check on his description and worked the case from there.

“I’m ecstatic. We’re all ecstatic,” Medford police Lt. Tim George said. “We’ve worn out a lot of shoe leather on this case.”

Delariva-Torres was lodged at the Jackson County Jail, where he was being held Monday on $2 million bail pending an arraignment.

Delariva-Torres has lived in the Medford area at least six months, George said.

If convicted on the assault charge, Delariva-Torres faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 7 1/2 years in prison.

Police have yet to establish a motive for the attack, George said.
