DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- A woman apprehended by Des Moines police has been charged with a 1993 murder in Jersey City, N.J.
New Jersey authorities had asked Des Moines police to arrest Cheryl Lynn Wanchanic, 30, who they believe killed Margaret Montecalvo, 67, in a robbery at the woman’s home. Wanchanic had long been a suspect in the murder, but prosecutors in New Jersey said they recently uncovered new evidence.
Des Moines police said when they arrived at a house where Wanchanic was staying she jumped into a car and sped away. Police said they lost her in traffic.
Shortly later, police got a tip that Wanchanic was at an apartment complex. They arrived to find her car and started searching a wooded area nearby. One officer spotted Wanchanic, and caught her crawling across a sidewalk near a pedestrian bridge over Interstate Highway 235.
Police said she was taken into custody about 15 minutes before New Jersey authorities arrived to pick her up.
