RAYNE, La. — Louisiana State Police is investigating the on-duty shooting death of a Rayne police officer Monday.

At around 2 p.m. Monday, the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations was asked by the Rayne Police Department to investigate an officer-involved shooting that took place on East Harrop Street, Trooper First Class Peggy Bourque, public information officer, said in a news release.

One Rayne police officer was shot and pronounced dead at the scene, Bourque said.

No other details were released.

Social media commenters and at least one news outlet reported the officer may have been mistaken for a suspect and was shot by another law enforcement officer.

Louisiana State Police detectives are asking anyone with information, photographs or videos of the Rayne shooting to report it anonymously at lsp.org and clicking Report suspicious or ciminal activity, or by calling the hotline at 1-800-434-8007.

In July, the Lafayette Police Department lost one of its officers during a hostage situation and shootout in Jeanerette . Senior Cpl. Segus Jolivette, a 35-year veteran of the force, was killed. The fatal shooting was rumored to be a case of friendly fire, although law enforcement agencies have not confirmed that on the record.

Nyjal Hurst, 31, of Jeanerette, was charged in February by Louisiana State Police with second-degree murder in the death of Jolivette and with 10 counts of attempted first-degree murder. Hurst was the man holed-up in the Jeanerette mobile home that resulted in the shootout.
