COLDWATER, Mich. — The Coldwater Director of Public Safety has died after being found unconscious during a workout in a department gym, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.
Joseph Scheid, 54, was found unresponsive in the Coldwater Public Safety Building on Aug. 3. Lifesaving measures were performed, but he was unable to be resuscitated.

Scheid had served with the Coldwater Police Department for 29 years. He joined as a patrol officer in 1996 and served as a K-9 officer and a K-9 team leader, as well as on the department’s CODE Team and drug enforcement teams.
“Beyond the badge, Joe believed that investing in the next generation was one of the greatest responsibilities of public service,” the department stated. “Whether through his involvement in youth sports, personally congratulating Coldwater High School graduates with handwritten cards, or establishing the Coldwater Police and Fire Scholarship Fund to support future public safety professionals, he consistently demonstrated a genuine commitment to the community.”
