YORK COUNTY, Pa. — A community in mourning is finding strength in unity after three detectives with the Northern York County Regional Police Department were killed in an ambush that also left two officers critically wounded.
Detective Sgt. Cody Becker, Detective Mark Baker and Detective Isaiah Emenheiser were fatally shot Sept. 17 when a gunman opened fire as they entered a residence in North Codorus Township. Officials said the 24-year-old suspect carried out a calculated attack before being killed in an exchange of gunfire.
As the investigation continues, York County residents and local businesses are stepping forward to support the families of the fallen and the officers still fighting to recover.
Honoring the fallen
The Northern York County Regional Police Department, in partnership with the York County Safety Collab, has endorsed the Honor Their Service donation portal as the official platform to provide financial assistance to the families of Becker, Baker and Emenheiser, as well as the two injured officers.
Officials emphasized that the portal is vetted and secure, ensuring contributions go directly to those affected by the tragedy.
Memorial services for the three detectives will be livestreamed on Sept. 25 to allow the broader community to take part, though in-person attendance will remain private for family, colleagues and invited guests.
Businesses extend support
Local hotels are offering discounted rates to those traveling to York to pay their respects, while others are participating in an initiative to “sponsor a hotel room” for visiting officers. Establishments such as the Best Western, Hampton Inn and Wyndham Garden are among those contributing.
Restaurants, cafes and entertainment venues across York County are also joining in. Businesses including Blaze for the Brave, Moonlight Cafe, Rutter’s, White Rose Bar & Grill, and the York Ice Arena are offering specials and fundraising opportunities to help the cause.
Explore York, the county’s tourism bureau, highlighted the efforts in a social media post, noting: “Our local hotels have stepped up to support those coming to honor the fallen officers and their families. York County stands with you through this difficult time.”
A community united
York County residents have already shown visible signs of support, lining roadways with flags and homemade signs during processions for the fallen officers. At a press conference, District Attorney Tim Barker described the outpouring of support as a reminder of the county’s resilience.
“All you saw along those roadways were members of our community … families, children waving American flags and holding signs saying ‘back the blue,’” Barker said. “There’s the light. There’s Christ’s light that drives out Satan’s darkness.”
For many, that light now shines through donations, volunteer efforts and simple gestures of solidarity with law enforcement.
York County leaders have urged residents to stay connected through the York County Strong webpage, where updates on services, fundraising efforts and opportunities to help will continue to be posted.
