SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The San Diego Police Department has confirmed an officer struck in the neck was wounded by another officer, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
Officer Heather L. Sheddon was injured after one bullet struck her in the neck during a May 17 pursuit and shootout that ended in the suspect’s death.
The incident began when officers saw a Jeep going 90 miles per hour on the highway and tried to pull it over. They lost the vehicle, but later found it abandoned on a street. A suspect, Dennis R. Fiel, was walking near the vehicle and attempted to run when officers approached. During the foot pursuit, 34-year-old Fiel took out a gun and opened fire. Officers fired back and Fiel died on the scene.
Sheddon was tended to by responding officers and taken to a hospital in a police vehicle.
An investigation by department’s homicide unit confirmed the shot came from another police weapon. Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman told the publication the department believes the bullet that struck Officer Sheddon might have been a ricochet.
The department told the publication Sheddon has since returned to work.
