NORTHGLENN, Colo. — A Northglenn police officer was shot and a suspect was shot and killed as police executed a narcotics search warrant at home Thursday morning.

Shot twice, the officer was rushed to the hospital in stable condition, said Northglenn Police Department spokesman Cmdr. Ron Haralson. A spokesperson at Denver Health Medical Center confirmed the officer was taken to their facility.

Haralson said the officer would be released from the hospital later Thursday.

The shooting happened around 10 a.m., on East 109th Place near Muriel Drive. That’s near the intersection of Muriel Drive and Washington Street.

Officers had used a battering-ram to open the front door of the home while executing their no-knock narcotics raid. The shooting occurred inside the home, said Haralson.

7NEWS reporter Russell Haythorn said several people were in the house when the shooting happened. Five people are now in police custody and three juveniles are now in protective custody.

A woman who lives nearby said her 12-year-old grandson was playing in the backyard when he heard at least two gunshots, and the frightened boy ran into the house.

The woman and her three grandchildren stepped outside and watched a stream of police cars, ambulances and fire trucks rushing to the shooting scene.

“I saw the SWAT truck with the sides and back full of SWAT men, they were all hanging on,” the woman said.

A police officer told the woman, “Pray for us because one of us just got shot.”

“It was pretty scary and we just sat there and we prayed for the officer,” the woman said.

The neighborhood is near Northglenn Middle School. School ended Wednesday.

Normally the kids in the neighborhood would be in school. But Thursday was the first day of a summer break.

It’s not clear if police knew the children could possibly be there when the SWAT team took action.

“I hope the best for them,” said neighbor Melinda Dauenbaugh. “No child should go through that. It’s just horrible.”
