SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Authorities say a man who was shot and killed after opening fire on a San Bernardino County sheriff’s helicopter has been identified as a former California Highway Patrol officer.

Sheriff’s officials say deputies killed Francis Murphy Rose as he exchanged gunfire with them in patrol cars. No deputies were injured in the Monday gunfight in Apple Valley, a high desert town 95 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

Deputies initially responded after receiving multiple calls about shots being fired in a neighborhood.

The Los Angeles Times reports CHP officials confirmed Tuesday that the 42-year-old Rose had been a patrol officer with the department and reported to the Barstow area office. He left the agency in 2013.
