GLEN BURNIE, Md. — Anne Arundel County police have identified the woman who was shot and killed Saturday by a Maryland Transit Administration Police officer as 38-year-old Angela Beatrice Randolph of no fixed address.
MTA officer Tracy Turpin was flagged down at 6:30 p.m. by two people regarding a disturbance at the Cromwell Station light rail stop in Glen Burnie, said county police spokesman Lt. T.J. Smith.
When Turpin approached Randolph, the two got into a verbal altercation. Randolph then assaulted the officer, attempted to choke her and pulled her hair, Smith said.
He said several people unsuccessfully tried to break up the fight, and the officer could not get Randolph off her. Smith said Turpin eventually pulled out her gun and shot the woman once in the upper leg.
Randolph was taken to an area hospital, where she died. Smith believes she was shot near her femoral artery.
Turpin, a three-year veteran of the force, had injuries that were not life-threatening. She has since been treated and released.
“It’s a very active investigation,” Smith said. “We’re still trying to figure out why this suspect acted the way she did.”
Though the shooting took place on Maryland Transit Administration property, county police will be handling the case.
“Deadly force is obviously the last resort, but our goal is to make it home at the end of the night,” he said.
There appears to be a substantial height and weight difference between the two women, Smith said.
