BWC: Suspect waves machete in traffic, hits LAPD cruisers, then charges at officers before fatal OIS

Officers fatally shot the man after he waved the machete at bystanders, fled the scene in an erratic pursuit and charged at cops with the blade

LOS ANGELES —Los Angeles Police released body camera footage showing a man threatening bystanders with a machete, waving it out his window during a pursuit and charging at officers with it, leading to an officer-involved shooting, KABC reported.

The July 13 incident began when LAPD officers responded to a call of a man getting out of his car in an intersection in Downtown L.A. and waving a machete at drivers, according to the report. Upon arriving at the scene, officers repeatedly instructed the man to drop the weapon.

The man refused, and at one point, cut his own tongue with the blade. He also threw a water bottle at officers before getting back into his car and attempting to flee the scene, still waving the machete out the window.

Officers initiated a pursuit, during which the man drove erratically and struck multiple cruisers, according to the report. The man eventually stopped his vehicle, before getting out and charging the officers with the machete.

Officers then fired multiple shots, striking the man. He was taken to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, according to the report. The incident remains under investigation.
