Frederick, Md. — Newly-released body camera footage shows the moment a suspect shot two officers, The Frederick News-Post reported.
The officer-involved shooting occurred in February of 2022. The video was not released until it was determined that the suspect would not be going to trial, according to the report.
On Dec. 15, a judge ruled that the suspect, identified as Dominique Lamarr Lewis, 27, was found guilty but not criminally responsible for the shooting. Lewis was instead sent to a secure mental health facility. He had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was sent to mental health facilities in the past.
The footage shows Frederick Police Department officers Kristen Kowalsky and Bryan Snyder approaching a man, now known to be Lewis, sitting on a utility box protector. The officers were responding to a weapons complaint regarding Lewis, according to the report.

Officers can be seen grabbing Lewis’s arm, a motion that blocked the camera from capturing what unfolded next. Several shots can be heard, and the officers fall back away. Both were hit by gunfire and wounded, according to the report.
The officers then stood up and returned fire at Lewis, hitting him several times and bringing him to the ground.
Both officers and Lewis were flown to a hospital to receive treatment. The officers were released the same day, according to the report. Kowalsky testified in court that she had not returned to police work since the incident. Snyder returned to the department at the end of 2022.
