Video: Man fires shots at Ohio officers, flees in vehicle before OIS

The man, who was being questioned by Marysville officers outside his home regarding a domestic dispute, suddenly became uncooperative, fired shots at an officer and fled

MARYSVILLE, Ohio — The Marysville Police Department released body camera footage from a chaotic and violent incident involving a man who shot at officers during a domestic dispute call, fled in his vehicle and was ultimately shot by a Union County sheriff’s deputy after a high-speed pursuit, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

The incident began on May 30 when officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute at a residence. Bodycam video shows officers speaking with a man outside his home next to a blue truck. The man initially cooperates with officers, explaining that he had argued with a woman he identified as both his girlfriend and wife over birthday gifts for his son.

Officers noted signs of possible impairment, citing slurred speech and inconsistencies in the man’s statements.

The situation escalated after the man became increasingly agitated and demanded that officers leave. He entered his truck, refused commands to exit, and drove onto his lawn before pulling into the cul-de-sac. Officers continued efforts for nearly 15 minutes to de-escalate the standoff and convince the suspect to surrender peacefully. During this time, the suspect repeatedly told officers to shoot him.

Suddenly, the suspect began revving his engine and prepared to flee. When one officer approached with a stun gun, the suspect pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking her with flying glass. Other officers returned fire as he sped away, firing more rounds as he fled.

Officers pursued the suspect westbound on U.S. 33. His vehicle eventually became disabled in the median, and he exited the truck while still holding a firearm. A Union County sheriff’s deputy then shot him multiple times.

Bodycam video shows officers providing medical aid, discovering gunshot wounds to Ohm’s neck, shoulder and abdomen. The suspect told officers he had shot himself before being subdued. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The suspect has been charged with attempted aggravated murder, and additional charges are expected. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an independent review of the officer-involved shooting. No officers sustained life-threatening injuries during the incident.
