When talking on portable radios, many officers look away from what is taking place in front of them to look at their microphone while transmitting. No matter where your mic is placed—shoulder, right or left epaulette, or attached to the front of your shirt—you must train yourself to look forward instead of looking sideways or down, which has you looking away from what should be your focal point.
