DEARBORN, Mich. — The Dearborn Police Department had a motorcyclist appear to taunt an officer while doing wheelies and doughnuts around their patrol cars before a long chase ensued and he ran out of gas.
The incident occurred at about 11:48 p.m. on April 9 .
An officer reported that the motorcyclist, later identified as a 26-year-old Dearborn resident, was behind him trying to antagonize him.
He took off at a high rate of speed on the Southfield Freeway headed towards Detroit.
The incident was picked up by Michigan State Police, which followed the motorcyclist in a helicopter using its forward-looking infrared camera.
The high-definition camera locates the motorcyclist traveling at excessive speeds at Telegraph and McNichols.
A traffic stop was attempted and the vehicle fled.
Troopers did not pursue.
One trooper did track the motorcyclist to Farmington Hills.
After popping wheelies down the freeway and reaching speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour in Redford traveling down Beech Daly, the driver ran out of gas in Farmington Hills and the suspect was arrested by Farmington Hills police.
He is lodged on their charges.
MSP, Dearborn Police and Redford police are also seeking charges.
“This suspect risked his own life, lives of other drivers and the police officers involved in this incident by his behavior,” said F/Lt. Mike Shaw. “Great work by all involved to take him into custody without any one being hurt or killed.”
