Three Pennsylvania officers, Police Detective Sgt. Cody Becker, Detective Mark Baker and Detective Isaiah Emenheiser, were tragically killed and two others were wounded in an ambush by a suspect lying in wait. For public safety families, this represents the nightmare possibility that comes with the badge.

In this episode of The Brief: Wellness Edition, Emily Hitchings and Greg Friese discuss how an officer can explain the difference between probability and possibility to help their families manage their concerns, while also understanding the risks of the profession. Hitchings specifically encourages officers to discuss how their equipment training reduce their risk, but not to make promises.

“Share with your families all the things you are doing to stay safe. Be honest, allow space, don’t try to fix it. Just listen and offer reassurance.”
