OKLAHOMA CITY — A deputy rescued a woman from her burning vehicle just seconds before the entire car was engulfed in flames.

The fiery rescue from Dec. 17 was caught on Deputy Matthew Yerby’s body-worn camera. The driver of the vehicle had taken a roundabout too fast, causing her to lose control of her vehicle and travel off the roadway, Sheriff Tommie Johnson III told KFOR.

After the vehicle crashed, the engine caught fire and quickly spread to the rest of the vehicle.

“I really think this captures the moment and what happened and how seconds mattered,” Johnson told KFOR.

Body camera video shows Yerby springing into action, pulling out a baton and breaking a window after the driver’s door became jammed.

Yerby pulled the woman to safety and seconds later, the vehicle became engulfed in flames.

“Without even thinking of his own safety, Deputy Yerby rushed to the burning car and saved the woman. If he had hesitated even a second or two, the victim likely would have been killed,” Johnson said.
