ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A suspect and a police K-9 were killed during an officer-involved shooting near the Albuquerque International Sunport, KRQE reported.

APD Chief Harold Medina said the series of events began on May 27 when officers were called to the Comfort Inn Albuquerque Airport to recover stolen tools from a trailer. During that operation, a SWAT team attempted to apprehend the suspect, but he escaped.

Police tracked the suspect to the Comfort Inn. When the suspect attempted to leave the hotel and spotted officers, he fled back inside and then jumped from a second-story window.

K-9 Rebel was deployed and successfully stopped the suspect. However, as officers approached, the suspect produced a firearm, prompting a shootout, according to APD. Both the suspect and Rebel were killed in the exchange.

“Rebel was a loyal and courageous member of the Albuquerque Police Department for seven years and served our city with honor and bravery,” the department posted on Facebook. “He was not only a partner to his handler but a valued member of our police family. His dedication and service will never be forgotten.”
