WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump issued a proclamation recognizing Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week, honoring fallen officers and pledging continued support for law enforcement nationwide.

“We honor the courageous men and women serving in law enforcement and memorialize those who sacrificed their lives defending the thin blue line,” Trump stated in the proclamation.

Peace Officers Memorial Day, observed annually on May 15, pays tribute to local, state, tribal and federal law enforcement officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty. The week in which it falls is recognized as National Police Week.

Trump’s message emphasized both remembrance and policy. He highlighted the dangers officers face, criticized previous criminal justice policies and reaffirmed his administration’s focus on public safety.

“A nation in chaos ceases to be a citadel of liberty,” Trump wrote, asserting that “soft-on-crime policies” in the prior administration had “emboldened criminals” and “jeopardized public trust.”

The proclamation renewed Trump’s call for Congress to codify an executive order mandating the death penalty for those convicted of murdering a law enforcement officer. He also urged the passage of a broader crime bill that would include enhanced protections for police.

“We are indebted to those who choose this righteous profession,” he wrote. “Their lives, legacies and sacrifices will forever be remembered by our grateful Nation.”

In accordance with federal law, Trump directed that U.S. flags be flown at half-staff on May 15 and encouraged Americans to observe Police Week with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
