WENATCHEE, Wash. — Dash cam video captured gunfire erupting seconds after an officer approached a suspicious vehicle.
According to Wenatchee World, Deputy Lee Risdon approached the vehicle in an empty parking lot around 1 a.m. March 2.
Upon greeting the vehicle’s occupant, 66-year-old Robert L. Friess, Risdon spotted a pistol and ran for cover.
An ensuing shootout in the lot resulted in an estimated 28 shots fired as both men took cover behind their respective vehicles. At some point, Risdon shot Friess in his right hand.
A high-speed pursuit between the suspect, Risdon, and backup ended after a spike strip disabled Friess’ vehicle. Once the vehicle came to a stop, police were able to get the suspect to surrender after 12 minutes. A black-powder revolver was found in the suspect’s car.
Friess, who is already facing domestic violence charges in connection to a previous incident, was charged with first-degree assault and eluding police. The suspect, who is a professional hunting outfitter and guide, had 17 firearms removed from his home following the shootout.
Deputy Risdon was unharmed. Per policy, the deputy is on leave as police investigate the shooting.
