WILSON COUNTY, Texas — Texas law enforcement fatally shot a carjacking suspect during a gun battle after he fired at deputies, KENS5 reported.

The suspect, 23-year-old Fernando Hernandez was shot multiple times on Feb. 27 in a barrage of bullets from law enforcement officers after leading them on a pursuit, Sheriff Joe Tackitt told the news site.

The pursuit began after Hernandez stole a vehicle from a residential home. The resident came outside, and Hernandez fired on him before driving away.

When deputies were able to stop Hernandez, he began firing at officers. Law enforcement returned fire and Hernandez was hit several times.

Hernandez was taken to the hospital in critical condition and died.

Witness, Chris Jacobs, recorded videos of the shootout and shared them with KENS5.

“I can’t believe that guy got out of the truck and started shooting those cops,” one voice said in the video. “He locked his brakes, and just turned around and started shooting.”

The incident was under investigation.
