BWC: Man approaches Houston officer with raised machete before fatal OIS

The man, suspected of threatening store cashiers and stealing merchandise, ignored commands to drop the weapon and ran toward the officer with the machete raised

HOUSTON — The Houston Police Department released body-worn camera footage showing an officer-involved shooting of a man who advanced toward police with a machete, Click 2 Houston reported.

The May 16 incident began when officers responded to reports that a man stole items from a Family Dollar store. Employees told police that the man threatened them with a knife as he fled the store.

Video shows officers later locating the suspect on a bridge over a highway. The man ignored verbal commands and advanced toward an officer while holding a machete. An officer fired at the suspect, striking him.

The suspect was transported to a hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.
The officer was not injured in the incident.
