MALAGA, Spain — Spanish police say they found a diamond worth more than $16,000 in a thief’s stomach after he was taken to a hospital for an X-ray.
Authorities said the thief stole the stone, worth about $16,500, from a restaurant in a luxury beach resort in Marbella, just outside of Malaga on the southern coast, El Pais reported Wednesday.
A British tourist reported her purse stolen with the diamond in it by two men who entered the restaurant.
Police later stopped a car with four men who had criminal backgrounds. They were detained after the purse was discovered in the vehicle.
An officer saw one of the men put his hand to his mouth and was taken to a medical center, where the X-ray revealed the diamond in his stomach.
The men were not identified. Police did not mention how they plan to retrieve the gem.
