BWC: Officer shoots man who raised object believed to be a gun, later identified as a knife

When an officer arrived at the scene, a person exited a house claiming they had been “hit” by a gun

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — St. Louis County police released body-camera footage from an officer-involved shooting of a man who raised a knife toward an officer, First Alert 4 reported.

The May 26 incident began when a Hazelwood police officer responded to the scene and encountered a person walking away from a home carrying a bag. The individual told the officer he had been “hit with a gun,” video shows.

Moments later, a woman and another man exited the house. The man was holding an object. The officer drew his weapon and ordered the man to drop what he believed was a firearm.

“Drop the [expletive] gun,” the officer can be heard shouting.

The man then appeared to shift the object from his side to his chest area, raising it in the direction of the officer. The officer fired two rounds, striking the individual.

After the shooting, the man told the officer he was holding a knife, not a firearm.

Investigators later recovered a large knife from the scene, which they said the man had in his hand during the encounter. A semi-automatic pistol was also found inside the residence.

The suspect was charged with one count of unlawful use of a weapon.
