Texas PD officer killed in head-on collision while returning home from shift

Kaufman Police Officer Austin Cooley was killed in a head-on crash while returning home from a shift; Cooley also served as deputy chief of South Hunt County Fire Rescue

HUNT COUNTY – A Wolfe City man was killed Tuesday in a head-on collision south of Greenville, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

DPS said the crash occurred near the intersection of State Highway 34 and County Road 2186, about a mile south of Greenville.

Preliminary findings indicate a 2013 Dodge Ram pickup was traveling south on SH 34 when a northbound 2005 Honda Accord crossed into the oncoming lane and struck the pickup head-on.

The driver of the Honda was identified by DPS as Austin Cooley, 26. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cooley served as deputy chief of South Hunt County Fire Rescue and was returning home after his shift as a Kaufman police officer.

The crash remains under investigation, and no additional information has been released.
