CORDELE, Ga. — Authorities say a chase and shooting on an interstate in central Georgia has left one person dead of a self-inflicted gunshot and two officers injured, potentially by friendly fire.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Terry Howard tells local media the chase began around 4 p.m. Thursday when Ashburn police tried to pull over a car for a tag violation. He says the suspect sped off and fired at pursuing officers.
The vehicle eventually stopped on Interstate 75 in Crisp County.
Howard says an Ashburn police officer and a Turner County deputy were injured by gunfire apparently from another officer. Both were treated at a hospital and released.
The suspect was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot. An injured female passenger was taken to a hospital.
An investigation is ongoing.
