GRETNA, La. — An officer and two suspects were shot during an undercover bust Tuesday.

The Times-Picayune reports an 18-year veteran officer was hit in his vest after approaching two suspects parked in a vehicle.

Darryl Johnson, 22, and Darrin Jones, 23, suspected of selling heroin, attempted to strike the officer with their car. When that failed, the men rammed a police cruiser.

The officer opened fire as the pair again barreled toward him. It was then that the officer was struck by gunfire and three other officers shot at the vehicle.

Police were able to stop the car by entering through the driver’s side window. Johnson was shot in the head and Jones was hit multiple times. Both have “extensive” criminal records, according to police.

The officer’s vest stopped the bullet and he is currently in the hospital in good condition, according to the report.

Both suspects are currently hospitalized.

Police recovered a handgun from the vehicle. The investigation is ongoing.
